Academic English World Trade Game

One Sunday morning, all the Academic English students were brought together to play the World Trade Game. They were given random card to decide which countries they would be and each country had very different amounts of resources. They had to produce products to sell to The World Bank and trade with other countries to get what they needed. They also had to settle all disputes with the United Nations. The majority of students were very enthusiastic and many showed a lot of initiative, so a lot of students earned points for their colour teams! Here are some pictures of the action!

Students on the Academic English Course completed a Genetics Project as part of their Science Lessons. They had to create a super poster to demonstrate their new knowledge. The work produced was fantastic! Check it out!

Solar System Project

Academic English: Science Class - Solar System Projects

The Academic English students had to research our solar system and find out facts about each planet. They then had to work in groups to build a model solar system. They also had to present their models to the rest of the class and discuss problems they had and any limitations of the models. The presentations were of an excellent standard and were full of very interesting facts. The students gave eachother feedback about their models and presentations. They all worked extremely hard and everyone showed an improvement in the end of week test! Well done!!

Water Sports at Rutland Water

A sunny Sunday afternoon saw a large group of the English and Multi Activity students hitting Rutland Water for a spot of canoeing, under the watchful eyes of the staff at the watersports centre as well as Joe, Julie and Alex Q, the students took to their boats and performed some interesting challenges, including paddling standing up, racing across the lake and trying to capsize Tony's kayak! Loads of fun in the sun was had by all and here are a few of the pictures from our great afternoon out!

Here at Uppingham we like to keep our Teachers and Activity Leaders in check, and there comes a time in every Discovery Summer School that they have to face the wrath of the students.

Here you can see some fo the students plotting how to get revenge on their staff team with a bit of help from Social Diretor Sarah and AL Joe.
And the target of their revenge.... TONY!!! That is right, NOBODY is beyond a bit of water bombing revenge and Tony is no exception!

Diogo scored a direct hit with his first bomb...

As did Charlie, much to the amusement of the other students...

Unfortunately Sarah got caught in the cross fire.... however did that happen??

Meanwhile Rachael, our Science Teacher was trying to avoid being gunged by competing against the girls in some of the pre gunging challenges....

The jug filling challenge proved tough for the students, as no matter how hard they tried they simply could not fill the jug whilst Tony was emptying it.... even some student cheating was not enough to win that battle!

Charlie's never say die approach made it tough for Tony though...

The beat the keeper challenge also saw Tony outsmart the students with only two boys managing to score past him.... surely this would be enough for Tony to avoid being gunged??

Nikita was one of the ones who did manage to score!!

Tony was confident that he had out performed Rachael and th other two staff whom the students had nominated for gunging... but what he didn't realise....

As he helped Connie prepare the slimey gunge with baked beans, bananas, tomato soup and loads more slimey ingredients.....

Was that although Rachael and he were in the final to avoid being gunged...

The whole event was fixed so that he would get covered in the slimey, sticky, smelly sludgy gunge along with her.

Tony's final words... "Bah.... Humbug!!!"

The Uppingham Oscars final film of the night was The Purple Dragon's Horror about a serial killer on the loose in Uppingham. And like all good horror films there is a twist in the tale.... We bet you will never guess who is the serial killer loose in Uppingham?

This film won the Oscar for the best original script. We are sure you will see why!!

This weekend saw the Uppingham Oscars come to town.

The challenge for each of the colour groups was to script, record, edit and produce a film as part of our evening activity on the Saturday and on the Sunday we held a full red carpet premier of all the films along with an Oscar presentation ceremony for the outstanding contributions throughout the weekend.

The films ranged from sktech shows to music videos and horror films. The teamwork and skills shown by all our teams was outstanding and when we consider that some people spend hours making videos like these, praise should surely be given to all our student teams and Activity Leaders who managed to put these together in just 24 hours!

Surely these videos and the experience of making them, and seeing them in our own surround cinema (complete with pop-corn) will be one of the highlights for all the staff and students at this year's Discovery Summer Uppingham.

Parachuting!

Academic English students completed a Parachute Project in their Science lessons. They designed a scientific investigation, produced parachutes, tested them and wrote a conclusion and evaluation. Here are some pictures of their wonderful parachutes and their testing session!

Uppingham Goes Morris Dancing

On Saturday morning, the teachers from both the Academic English Course and the English Multi-Activity Course Accompanied the Students into Uppingham Market Square to watch the National Morris Dancing Competition.

Morris Dancing is a form of traditional dancing that dates back as far as the mid 15th century. It is usually composed of patterns of rythmical stepping and movements with items such as sticks or handkerchieves accompanied by the sound of bells attached to the clog style footwear of the dancers. Often performed by more mature members of the community, it has been a focal point of many village social lives around England.

Our students went down to the square equipped with quiz questions to answer and photo tasks to complete which involved using their English to communicate with the Morris Dancers.

Later, on returning to the classrooms, many of the groups choreographed and performed their own Morris Dances as you can see in the video at the bottom of this post.

Trashion Show

Sunday evening saw Uppingham students designing outfits for our Activity Leaders to parade down the catwalk in using nothing but trash! This creative challenge was taken up admirably by all the students and some of the outfits were absolutely fantastic!
The students were given limited resources, consisting of sweet and crsp wrappers, left over poster paper from the classrooms and a few binliners. Their challenge was to make an outfit for their AL in just 45 minutes but the outfit was pre-determined. The judges could not have had an easy time, as the outfits were all absolutely outstanding and we surely have some potentially high flying fashion designers in our midst. Some of the outfits are featured below!

They included: Punk Milly, Astronaut India, Nurse Marketa, Queen Alex, Bride Alex (complete with bridesmaids), Lollipop Lady Rosselyn, Pirate Noah, Ninja Joe, Wizard Andy and Cowgirl Connie. Thanks to our Judges Chardonnay Abel and Hippie Tom and of course the lovely Group leader Virginia!

Well done to the winning team the Red Lions for their very impressive Brides and Bridesmaids outfits. If Kate and Will had waited a few more months I am sure that we would have seen this cutting edge design being worn in Westminster Abbey!

Do or Die!!!!

This week we saw some new workshops added to the menu here at Uppingham and one of them was cartoon making. The workshop has been focussing on the skills needed to construct a good cartoon with a strong storyline and high quality graphics. I am sure you will enjoy the results!

A Day in a Blue T-shirt

For some of our students, travelling away from home for the first time, possibly halfway around the world, a summer school in England, learning a language that might not be too familiar to them can be a difficult and challenging time. Here at Discovery Summer Uppingham we have an army of young men and women dressed in BLUE who are here especially to make our international students feel welcome and to set a positive, enthusiastic example of how to go about learning English in a FUN, SAFE manner.

This is our army of STUDENT HOSTS and Zuleikah, Roberta and Victoria have kept a photo diary over the last 24 hours so that you can have a peek into their world...

We wake up before the other students, at around 0715 so that we can wash and get ready for the day. At breakfast we have our first register of the day and try to split up so we can chat with the other girls before we have to go to lessons. We have to make sure we have our lanyards, ID cards and water bottles just like all the other students before we walk down the road to the classrooms.

Our timetable is pretty much the same as the other students. As well as the English and Academic Course lessons there are lots of Workshops and Activities throughout the morning and afternoon.

We help out in the classes by talking with the students and helping them with the work, though sometimes the teachers ask us to do special tasks like collecting the rubbish, so that our international students can focus on their work.

We help them with reading, writing and vocabulary. it can be tricky at times but most of the time it is fun!

At break time we help out with the tuckshop and sometimes we organise games like 'splat' with the international students. It is a good way to get to know them and have fun too.

Sometimes we help the students prepare for the Trinity exams. We sit with them one to one, and hold conversations with them, correcting their grammer and pronunciation.

After lessons have finished and there are no more lessons or workshops, we go back to our houses to have dinner. After dinner, each night we have a different activity. Last night it was 'Uppingham's got Talent' where some of our students performed brilliant songs and dances. On other nights we have Disco's, game shows, murder mysteries and films. And sometimes we get an hour or so to chill out and chat with the international students in our houses.

Finally after the evening activity, we head back to the house, where there is a mad rush for the showers so that we can get into our nice warm beds as fast as we can, so that we can go to sleep.... or at least that is what our supervisers think!!!

Academic English: Trip to Rockingham Castle

Here at Discovery Summer Uppingham, we pride ourselves on the links between the curriculum and our local surroundings.

Situated just 6km down the road from Uppingham School is Rockingham Castle. Built under the instructions of William the Conqueror almost a thousand years ago and frequently used by English royalty until 450years ago, the castle has remained in the Watson family hands ever since.

The location of the castle was chosen partly because of the stunning views over the Welland Valley and also as a tactical strong point in William the conqueror's battle to assert his control over the people of his newly seized lands. Rockingham provided an important seat of government in 1095 when the Council of Rockingham was held here.

Pictured are a large group of the students from the Academic English Course in the Rockingham Castle gardens.

During the medieval period the castle hosted many royal visits and Richard the Lionheart even hosted his Scottish counterpart here. John, the brother of Richard was also a frequent visitor, taking time to go hunting in Rockingham Forest. In fact, legend has it that on his final trip North John left his treasures in the Great Hall at Rockingham and therefore the missing crown jewels from his reign are buried somewhere in the grounds at Rockingham and not in The Wash as the history books would have us believe.

Here we see Dennis and Vsevolod trying out some of the historcial armour that would have been used in the battles for power in the years gone by.
One of our students, Nessy, who happens to be an excellent pianist was even allowed to perform on the grand piano in the Long Drawing room at the castle, a privilege that very few visitors have ever been afforded. It is these kind of experiences that set Discovery Summer Uppingham apart from its rivals.

Blind Date

The latest of our evening entertainment events was our own version of Blind Date, a well known British TV programme that highlights the quirky British sense of humour and offers the chance to find love and romance. Or in this case a chance to earn points for our Dragon or Lion teams.Randomly selceted students had to answer questions about a huge range of fun and interesting topics and those students from the audience who's answers agreed remained in with a chance of finding love (or more importantly points for their teams!!!)

Ekaterina and Yagiz were amongst the couples that were hooked up.

The Activity Leaders did an amazing job of generating noise from the lively audience and the participants enjoyed the race to be the last contestant in with a chance of romance.

Some of the stars of the show were a little more shy than others....

but she couldn't complain with the end result!

One of the highlights of this years Discovery Summer School in Uppingham has been the willingness of all the students to get involved and join in the fun. The audience participation has been amazing and we hope it continues throughout the rest of the course!

Possibly the most well matched couple of the night was Claire and Johannes. After being paired up together they spent the rest of the evening deep in conversation and with another week of Discovery Summer together who knows what the future might hold.....?

These pictures were taken on Saturday evening during our weekly barbecue, after the students had returned from the Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre and the Rutland Watersports excursions.

These photographs capture not only the historical architecture of the old school buildings, but also the vibrant, busy nature of our students as they go about their daily life.

These pictures from todays excursion were submitted to the blog by one of our students, unfortunately they didn't tag them with their name!!! But I am sure you will enjoy them all the same!

This afternoon a large group of Uppingham students visited the Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre. This half day excursion invoved the students coming up close to some of Britains most elegant and vicious birds of prey, but don't worry, all the birds there are hand reared and trained to perform tasks and stunts. The Uppingham students had the opportunity to hold and touch the birds in the glorious English sunshine which was a great reward for putting up with some more traditional showery weather this morning!

Many of the students were experiencing birds of prey at close quarters for the first time and it was rewarding to the staff on the trip to hear our students using their English to ask exciting questions about the many different types of bird on display.

As a bonus the students also got to see some large cat predators rescued from zoos and parks across the UK. These cats are looked after by the Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre when other organisations could no longer cater for their needs.

We want to say a massive goodbye to Saphia and even bigger thank you and goodbye to our student hosts Killian, Ted, Dan and Katie who have now left us. We have really enjoyed having you with us this summer and we hope you will stay in touch and leave plenty of comments on our blog!!

Workshop Presentations

Our first presentation of workshop activities took place yesterday afternoon with students sharing with the rest of their new friends, just some of the things they have been working on in week one. The activities were all done enthusiastically and the end results are things that all of our students can be very proud of. I do wonder how they are going to get those Big Head Masks in their suitcases though!! The Big Heads Mask-making Workshop was hugely popular and the end results were a mixture of the surreal to the world of cartoons, with a guest appearance from Sponge-Bob-Squarepants!

The Newsletter Workshop produced some outstanding publications to keep our students informed of what is going on here in Uppingham and around the world!

The Graffiti and Caligraphy Workshop fproduced some amazing work linked to their own countries and cultures. Their work will be on display in the school until the end of their work.

The Photo-Story Workshop created picture/text collages with a strong storyline in each one. Some of their work will soon be posted on this blog!

Uppingham Students Go to Cambridge

Wednesday saw all the Discovery Summer Uppingham students take to the buses and head off to Cambridge for their first full day excursion.

One of the highlights of a memorable day in Cambridge was the punting. Punting is a traditional pasttime in Cambridge and is a great way to experience the unique splendour and elegance of the many college buildings dotted around the city.

Many of the students have been studying Cambridge and its historical importance as a university city as part of their English Language lessons and as a result they were able to recognise some of the famous landmarks, such as King's College Chapel pictured below. Some of the students went on a tour of the college and its famous chapel, lead by one of the professors who teaches there.

But the real highlight of the day.... was seeing this poor chauffeur fall of her boat and into the water!!!

(This is not a Discovery Summer Student or Member of Staff and despite being a little cold I assure you she was fine and none of the students or staff on the excursion were harmed or soaked in any way)

And at the end of an exciting day both staff and students made the most of the coach journey back to Uppingham...

Casino Night... Oh What a Night!

Casino Night

Tuesday night was Casino night here in Uppingham. After a day packed with lessons, workshops, clubs and activities the students deserved their night out at the casino!

With prizes on offer for best dressed boy and girl and a whole range of games on offer for the students to pit their wits against the hand of chance, there was a fantastic celebratory atmosphere in the Upper Hall of the OSR

The poker table saw a lot of action...

Higher or Lower also proved very popular...

The amazing Student Hosts provided huge amounts of entertainment as our human fruit machine!

And the roulette kept everybody on the edge of their seats for hours!

A fantastic night was had by everyone and we can't wait for the next event in the Dragons versus the Lions Challenge!!

The Crystal Maze

The Crystal Maze

On Monday evening, the latest Dragons versus the Lions event took place. The Crystal Maze is a race between the teams where they can earn points by completing a series of difficult tasks that involve, intelligence, agility, communication and teamwork.

The tasks completed involved blindfolded team members being guided through a maze and collecting valuable items, making recognisable shapes out of human bodies on the lawn and collecting egg shaped crystals from the ground using a hook and three pieces of string, to name just three.

In this game the students had to drop the ball into the tube and catch it with the same hand before it touches the floor.... easier said than done!!

Skill, judgement and fine motor control as well as teamwork and good listening skills are needed when three people are using a hook tied to all of their pieces of string to pick up baskets with eggs inside. Here you can see Waad and her team mates focussing on the task in hand.

Lessons Have Begun

Monday morning saw the start of the lessons here at Uppingham. Having taken the placements tests on Satrurday morning, all the students have now taken up their place in their classes and this morning's lessons included a range of activities including introduction presentations, memory relay races on the lawns, a mathematical code-breaking treasure-hunt and planning how to design parachutes in science.

And in the workshops students have already studied Japanese writing in Caligraphy, written a contemporary love story in Photo-Story Workshops and started work on shaping their Big-Head masks in Mask-making.

After causing the flour cake to collapse, the sweet had to be pulled out using only teeth! Messy!!!

The atmosphere around the egg throwing challenge was very 'egg'citing!!

The whole crowd were on the edge of there seats!

The under and over Leap Frog Race was fun for everybody!

The egg challenge involved throwing and (hopefully) catching eggs at increasing distances until you drop it or it breaks in your hands....

Duck Apple was competitive and also kept some of the students really quiet!

The students had a great time sprinting from building to building and making new friends as they attempted to complete the 10 tasks as quickly as possible.

The students had to spell out either LIONS RULE or GO DRAGONS using their bodies.... can you tell what team this is?

Transporting a jug of water sounds easy, but getting it across an obstacle course is never as simple as it sounds! This team managed to complete the task without too many spillages!

Well Done to the PINK LIONS who claimed 10 POINTS as the winners of the first of our many inter group competitions!

Saturday evening was the Uppingham Barbecue and a traditional English summer downpour did not dampen the spirits of the Uppingham staff and students!

After the barbecue the students took part in a Photofun challenge. This required the colour coded groups to dash around the campus completing tasks in different locations.

The challenges ranged from finding the Memorial Hall and painting the Lions and the Dragons on their faces to forming human pyramids on the lawns of Uppingham School. And all of the tasks had to be photographed to gain their tea points!

Today the Uppingham students are visiting the National Space Centre near Leicester. With many displays and exhibits showing the science behind space travel and with Science Teacher Rachael Scullion on board the budding Uppingham astronauts and cosmonauts are in for a fantastic day out!

With the Academic English students taking part in a week long science project on space this is not only a great excursion but a fantastic example of how Discovery Summer links its activities programme to the academic curriculum!

Uppingham:;Up, Up and Away!!!

Discovery Summer, Uppingham received their first arrivals on Friday. The new students all arrived in good spirits despite long delays on the motorway, coming up from Heathrow. Heavy showers earlier in the day had blown over by the time the coaches started to arrive and the sun shone through on the new arrivals.

Welcome Games were organised on the lawns of Samworth House, as the registration process was carried out in the Arrivals Office. A team of excellent student hosts formed the welcoming committee, with card games, table football and door sign making activities, laid on in the Samworth's lounge.

Acutely aware that some students' bedroom carpets were becoming invisible, we introduced the "Big Bedroom Clean Up Competition" in Samworths, the largest boys boarding house at Uppingham, to incentivise students to use their wardrobes, clean up their floors and make their beds. In return, three prizes for the best rooms were up for grabs - including the much sought after first prize of a chauffeured trip to local supermarket Tesco with a Discovery Summer voucher! Students have never enjoyed cleaning so much - parents please take note for when your child returns home.

The Uppingham Max Factor Team were out in force this week as our own activity leaders, teachers - and Course Director Patrick - were subjected to a bin-bag make over.
