This year sports at Uppingham is branching out into disability awareness and the first game we have introduced is visually impaired football which is a popular Paralympic sport.
The ball is less bouncy than a normal football so it stays closer to the ground and it has a bell inside so that the visually impaired players can hear it. Our students gave it a try, using blindfolds to simulate the blindness and whilst it proved to be a real challenge, it also helped them learn a lot about what it must be like to be visually impaired.
It also helped them to develop their communication skills, shouting instructions to their team-mates from all over the world, using the language we are all here to learn more about; English.
Other students enjoyed playing Ultimate Frisbee and some Olympic style swimming.
