Goodbye from Discovery Summer 2017

Parachute Design in Pre-Boarding

The camera crew working on the new Discovery Promotional films were treated to some science in action yesterday as our Pre-Boarding classes, Hogwarts and St Trinian's, made some model parachutes to drop from the historic school tower.
The camera crew looked on keenly as the parachutes were dropped, complete with eggy passengers to test whether the speed of descent was reduced sufficiently to prevent the uncooked eggs from smashing on impact.
The historic old school tower provided the perfect setting for dropping the parachutes, which will form part of an experiment later this week when Hogwarts and St Trinian's students will be making rockets to launch their eggs as high into the Uppingham sky as possible, before hopefully watching their egg-manauts descent gently back to earth without cracking up.
Unfortunately Milton will have to head back to the drawing board with his capsule and parachute design as his egg was well and truly scrambled after being reunited with the ground.
Gleb on the other hand cracked a huge smile after seeing his egg successfully return to earth with nothing more than a meagre bump. His egg was in tact and he is now ready to press on to the next stage which is the rocket design.
This design by Barbara and Kristina also seems to have done the trick. This week's project ties in to the theme of 'Space' and on Monday the Pre-Boarding students will be visiting the Leicester based National Science Centre to learn more about rocket technology and human interactions with space over history. Look out for more blog posts about this later in the week.
