Goodbye from Discovery Summer 2017

Big Heads Workshop

Big Heads are Coming to Uppingham

Uppingham is about to be invaded by Big Heads. These are an extra-ordinary class of human/cartoon hybrids with enormous animated heads.

They have been carefully designed by a group of students supervised by Ula. Their work will be displayed along with all the other workshop groups at Thursday's presentations, so keep watching to blog to see the invasion of the Big Heads.

Below are some pictures of the craftsmen and women at work in their workshop. The attention to every detail of the research for the mask is amazing I am sure you will agree.

Learning about the vocabulary that will be needed for the mask-making

Applying the new vocabulary to pictures of real people

Practicing the drawing of the head is key to getting the final design correct

Without colour a mask would be boring, so it is important to get the colours right from the beginning

Students are encouraged to discuss their ideas with students of different nationalities

Once the students have completed some practice sketches, they are ready to move on to the final design

Sponge Bob Square pants and Homer Simpson are ideal candidates for Big Head mask modelling due to their geometric contours.

Students complete worksheets with a sketch and information about their chosen characters. Here we see images of Bender (Futurama) and Simba (Lion king)

Stewie (Family Guy)

Timmy

And a Viking

The next step is to construct a framework for the mask and then overlay this with papier machee in order to achieve the desired shape for the head.
